The concepts of “equality” and “equity” are often used interchangeably by pundits, but they could not be more different morally.
Let’s use the definitions put forward by Vice President Kamala Harris, someone for whom race has been a political asset. She defined the equity vs equality dynamic this way: Equity means that everyone “ends up at the same place” by having equal footing. Equality, on the other hand, means everyone has the same amount.
This definition is often depicted in a cartoon showing three people of different heights standing along a fence. In one image, they’re all standing on the same-sized “equality” block and only two can see. In the next image, they all have different sized “equity”
