The state of Michigan is taking action in response to the growing number of overdose deaths that have disproportionately affected people of color over the course of the COVID-19 pandemic.
The Michigan Opioids Task Force is requesting proposals from experienced organizations and individuals to serve as a racial equity consultant who will guide a new statewide Racial Equity Workgroup to target these racial disparities.
“These deaths are tragic, and we want to encourage anyone struggling with substance abuse to seek help,” Michigan Department of Health and Human Services Director Elizabeth Hertel said in a press release. “I am proud that our organization is taking swift action to prevent overdose deaths – especially in minority groups who are experiencing higher death rates.”
