Public school district in Michigan offers a ’21-day equity challenge’ that includes ‘white privilege checklists’ and culminates with a call to ‘join a BLM or affiliated protest’ – and a list of ‘microaggressions to avoid,’ including calling America ‘the land of opportunity’
- Farmington Public School District represents 9,000 students in 16 schools, 20 miles north west of downtown Detroit
- In November the school district launched an optional 21 day course for staff which they called an ‘Equity Challenge’
- The concept was based on the theory that it takes 21 days to form a habit, and staff were encouraged to build awareness of cultural issues
- Each of the 21 days had a theme, such as Identity and Intersectionality, Race and Class Privilege, Implicit Bias and Microaggressions
- The course ended with an ‘action plan’ that included attending Black Lives Matter protests
